Probationary Membership

The target shooting sport is tightly regulated to ensure only trustworthy and sensible persons have access to firearms. This means there are necessary checks done by the 49th prior to acceptance of any probationary member.

All persons wishing to join any shooting club must be able to sign a declaration that they are not prohibited from access to firearms under Section 21, Firearms Act 1968. (This is called a “Section 21 declaration”)

At the 49th we run three probationary courses per year with small groups of 4-8 people with a 3-month probationary course for a small fee (subject to satisfactory security checks that may include notification of the West Midlands Police).

This includes four key modules covering basic techniques and training across Full-bore and small-bore rifles, Black Powder pistols, and safe handling of rifles, ammunition, and pirodex within the target shooting sport. The course has been designed to meet and exceed the Home Office requirements.

Our probationary course must be completed in full before any person can be considered for full membership. Completing the probationary course does not guarantee full membership and the 49th retains the right to end memberships and probation at any time.

These modules run over eight weeks on rotating Saturdays between 10 am and 4 pm.

We’ll be with you every step of the way to support you during your probation on a supervised  “one-to-one” basis on the range during live fire practice.  These can be booked in advance on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Probationary members will need a minimum of 12 recorded shooting visits to the club within the three months of probation to be considered for full membership.

There are no hidden fees with PPE provided and no hire charges for the use of the Club rifles. You will only pay for your ammunition (unless you have a valid FAC ammo purchased, it must be kept on the club premises at all times.

Having completed your probationary period, your application to join will be put to the committee members who will take into consideration your attitude and competency before making a decision. If approved you will be required to pay the balance remaining of the full membership fee and the police licensing authority will be notified.

Full Membership

We also offer a joint membership discount for families (living at the same address).
